ASPCA’s Household Toxins: Keeping Your Pets Safe

ASPCA’s Household Toxins: Keeping Your Pets Safe

March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month. That applies to humans AND pets. Each year the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) assembles a list of the top 10 household toxins reported to their call line. Most people remember to take care of cleaning products. But there are other items you may not think of as toxins.

Medication

Medications appear THREE times on the toxin list. Unfortunately, pets get curious about pill bottles and the tablets, capsules, and powders inside.

It’s important to keep anything health-related secured away from curious noses and paws:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications
  • You and your family’s prescriptions
  • Veterinary prescriptions for your pets

Food for Thought

We love our snacks. But many items and ingredients we use are toxic to cats and dogs.

You want to ensure nothing escapes your notice:

  • Grapes - including raisins
  • Onions and garlic
  • Sugar-free products containing Xylitol

Pest Control

No one wants uninvited "guests" around the house. Insects, spiders, and rodents top the list of pests we try to keep OUT. Unfortunately, the chemicals in pest control products are toxic to pets:

  • Bug sprays
  • Insecticides
  • Rodenticides

Playing it Safe

You work hard to keep your pets safe. And that means watching out for household toxins. Ensure those products stay out of reach behind closed and latched doors.

And if you suspect your pet’s been poisoned? Contact the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline: (888) 426-4435.

For now, why not use the app to set a reminder to sweep the house for potential problems? Your pets will thank you!
